Het ultieme bewijs dat Kusama's 'Infinity Room' de beste selfieplek op aarde is

Ze mocht zich al eens de meest populaire kunstenaar ter wereld noemen; Yayoi Kusama is zoiets als een levende kunstlegende, en iemand die Andy Warhol en Georgia O'Keefee tot haar vriendenkring mag reken. Haar beroemdste werk, Infinity Room, is de crème de la crème van belevingskunst, die je zelf moet ervaren om het te begrijpen. Popsterren van Katy Perry tot Adele zijn haar oneindige omgevingen binnengestapt, die, zo vertrouwde de kunstenaar eens aan BOMB Magazine toe, "[voortkomen] uit hallucinaties die alleen ik kan zien. Ik vertaal de waanvoorstellingen die me tergen in sculpturen en schilderijen. Ik schilder al sinds ik tien jaar oud was, toen die hallucinaties ook begonnen."

Een bezoekje aan een van haar installaties is makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. Het Broad Museum in Los Angeles zag zich genoodzaakt om een ingewikkeld wachtsysteem te bedenken zodat bezoekers ieder één minuut in de ruimte konden reserveren. "Door de beperkte capaciteit kunnen niet alle bezoekers de kamer bekijken, aangezien de kamer al vroeg in de ochtend volgeboekt is," waarschuwt het museum.

Degenen die niet in de buurt wonen van lopende tentoonstellingen, hebben het nog lastiger om Kusama's werk te ervaren. Voor veel Amerikanen komt daar binnenkort verandering in nu haar Infinity Rooms van begin 2017 tot het einde van 2018 door de VS en Canada zullen toeren. Sat Nav Saturday this week, we're taking you to visit the work of one of the most important living artist from Japan, 'Yayoi Kusama'. Not only she's a woman but she's also been creating havoc in the art scene since the 50's. Throughout her career she's been practiced in a variety of media but what we seems to recognise most is her installation which involved eye popping colour objects played with the idea of perception.
