15 Vintage Polaroids Get Animated into Hilarious GIFs

Cari Vander Yacht warps old photos into silly animations.

This article was originally published on May 30, 2014 but we think it still rocks!

Vander Yacht is making us want to dig through our old shoeboxes full of forgetten family snapshots. The Brooklyn-based artist takes 50-year-old photographs found in thrift shops in her Portland hometown and animates them into ridiculous GIFs in a series called TGIMGIF (Thank God It's Monday Graphic Interchange Format). From a woman who rapidly swaps faces with her dog, to a young girl scowling on a horse pushing her father out of the frame, these modernized Polaroids are the type of Kodak moments that will keep you giggling.

Many of Yacht's animated GIFs were part of a project collaboration under the name Reanimation."Half of the old photos shown here were not found in thrift stores, but provided by artist Thomas Sauvin's 6-year collection of discarded films salvaged from Beijing's city recycle center.

In an article on FastCo, Yacht said, “At a certain point, one must justify their creepy acquisition of other people’s pasts. Either you make up stories about how you’re related to the people in the pictures or you animate them." Some of the images look like the product of a serious day-dreamer, while others are just silly manipulations of family memory. One could say her work has an undercurrent of moderated memory and history—re-defining the past through the tools of the present—though even without the analysis, these GIFs are hilarious.
