"Alternative Barbie" Comes To Life

Nikolay Lamm launches a funding campaign for a doll with realistic measurements using 3D printing.

When Nickolay Lamm released images of a 3D-printed “real Barbie,” he fully expected them to go viral. Lamm specializes in creating visuals that highlight overlooked societal flaws; the strange proportions of Barbie dolls are one such glaring mistake. So, Lamm created a new version of the fashion doll using the Center for Disease Control's average measurements for a 19-year-old girl. His message was, “Average is Beautiful.” As the story made its rounds, Lamm received a rush of requests: People wanted to know where they could buy a doll like the one he created.

Enter Lammily: a doll that will be manufactured according to Lamm’s model. He launched his funding campaign today with an end goal of $100,000.00. Backers will get an exclusive First Edition Lammily and, for $100 or $5000, a signed Vitruvian Lammily poster.

In addition to average measurements, Lammily will have articulated wrists, knees, elbows, and feet, minimal makeup, and a simple wardrobe. Though a diminished focus on fashion could be a positive change, we have to admit we’re slightly disappointed she’s not wearing a digital dress. We can’t resist a wearable.

Especially after Barbie posed for the cover of Sports Illustrated and declared herself #Unapologetic, it seems like the doll scene could use a dose of normality. Lamm has already consulted with Robert Rambeau, former VP of manufacturing of Mattel, who will help choose a high-quality manufacturer. With enough backers, we’ll see legions of Lammilys hit shelves soon.
