Matthew Herbert's New Newsie Music

The musician is going to turn one day’s events in the news into live performance.

Matthew Herbert has given us One One—an album written, performed, recorded, and produced entirely by him—and One Club, an album recorded using only the sounds from one night at the Robert Johnson nightclub in Frankfurt. And now, in a continuation of this singular theme, he’s to create One Day—an hour long performance piece in collaboration with the London Sinfonietta. The event will take place on November 20th at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and will involve the Saturday September 25th, 2010 edition of the Guardian newspaper brought to life on stage. According to Herbert, the fodder for the performance will include the everything from the main news story that day—the leader of the opposition being announced—to the lifestyle sections in the magazine, journalists’ interview tapes, recorded sounds from printing presses that morning, and even recipes from the food section recreated on stage. The aim is to re-engage music with current affairs.
