Miniature Architectural Projection Mapping

In a reversal of the usual trend for large buildings, PROJEKTIL use a showroom model, but the results are no less impressive.

Taking an architectural scale model as their canvas, Zurich-based art collective PROJEKTIL use five projectors to create an augmented reality installation that demonstrates you don’t need large buildings to make an impressive projection mapped display. In fact, it’s turned the projection mapping trend on its head and, in a neat reversal of the trajectory, has used the opposite of a finished building—the genesis of it—by projecting on a showroom model.

Controlling the ambience and interaction with an iPad, they use an OpenSoundControl protocol for communications, MeshWarpServer for real-time meshwarping, MaxMSP/Jitter for interaction control and video play, with the modeling, animation, and rendering achieved using Blender.

They explain:

On the model can be shown various simulations (nightlife, sun, and shadow, etc.), and also information (use zones, green areas, transport etc.). Not only the mapped model projection is controlled interactively by an iPad, but the whole space, which includes 44 dimmable dali lamps, 6 DMX lamps, 9 beamers, a touchscreen and the audio system.

The result is a really accurate display that is a fun twist on the more grand scale fare we’re used to seeing, but just as effective, cleverly turning a structure that is usually just there for representational purposes into an augmented artwork.
