The Olympics kicked off in London last Friday with an eccentric but fun-loving opening ceremony, which packed in a potted history of British culture, politics, and industry all conveyed in a variety of visual and musical styles. Tim Berners-Lee was there representing for the digital age and at one point I could’ve sworn I heard a little bit of chiptune music/8-bit computer sounds mixed in with the music medley.Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t but there’s no denying the 8-bit aesthetic of this short video The 8-Bit Games! from Flikli productions, which celebrates this sporting event using pixel people. All of the Olympic sports are here in pixelated glory from archery to water polo, with a suitably 8-bit tune to accompany them—perhaps channelling some of the spirit of the Commodore 64 game Summer Games from all the way back in 1984.And if you’re already feeling overwhelmed by all this sport, remember there’s lots of Olympic-commissioned art to experience too, to balance it all out.@stewart23rd
