UFO Sightings And The Paranormal Abound In Sabrina Ratté's New Video Trilogy

With her "Sighting" trilogy, Ratté offers up parallel worlds inspired by strange and supernatural events.

Today, Montreal-based experimental video artist Sabrina Ratté, unveils Sighting, a stellar retro-futuristic odyssey that transcribes her signature synthetic aesthetic to a series of three videos primarily concerned with strange and paranormal phenomena. “With Sightings, I was interested in exploring the idea of UFO sightings in the same light; on a fine line between a utopic and dystopic representation of another world, in which we project our greatest hopes or our greatest fears,” she told The Creators Project.

Consisting of Littoral ZonesLandfall and Habitat, this psychedelic triptych, with sound from longtime collaborator Roger Tellier-Craig, “depicts the mind as an architectural space where the psychological projections are so tangible that they become a believable reality,” Ratté says. While each of her new videos will be released weekly by the Undervolt&Co label, Ratté gave The Creators Project an exclusive insight into Littoral Zones, the first part of her enigmatic trilogy. The cosmic odyssey immerses viewers inside spatial architectures and geometrical landscapes, revealing Ratté's meticulous work with light, perspective, and a morphing, evolving depth of field.

With the help of her trusty LZX Modular Video synthesizer, Ratté combines video signals with electronic video synthesizer signals to generate 3D spaces that probe the analog/digital dichotomy. “This series explore the possibilities of creating 3D architectural spaces without using specialized 3D softwares, but rather by using analog video equipment and digital collage. The idea of projection is present in a lot of my videos; projecting oneself into a virtual space for example, or inside a utopic reality,” says Ratté.

But wait, there's more: Yoshi Sodeoka and Johnny Woods, the duo behind experimental video art label Undervolt & Co, are using the premiere as an opportunity to unveil a brand new version of their website, replete with an inventive, content-packed video “singles” section. “Our new 'Singles' feature is a way to share videos that don't necessarily fit into a larger 'album' concept. They will be free to stream, and the goal is to offer a more accessible way to introduce work by our artists,” explains Johnny Wood, label co-founder. Recent releases include creations from artists e*rock, Adam Ferriss, Emilio Gomariz, MSHR, Camilla Padgitt-Coles, Javier Galán Rico, and Giselle Zatonyl.

Between October 1st and 5th, visitors to Pittsburg's upcoming VIA festival can take part in lectures and performances by Undervolt & Co-associated artists, including A Bill Miller, MSHR, Sabrina Ratté, Yoshi Sodeoka, Jennifer Juniper Stratford, and Johnny Woods. It's undoubtedly an emergent movement, but is it emblematic of a new wave of new media art? Or simply an update to classic digital and net art themes? We may have to ask Mulder and Scully—if Sabrina Ratté's Littoral Zones is any indication, the truth is out there.
