"I took this photo from my hotel window in Columbo, Sri Lanka. I will never forget how casually men in business suits, holding brief cases were hanging out of the open doors and onto the side of the packed trains as they sped towards Colombo main station in the early morning rush hour"—Jacob Wallwork.
For the last few years, photography platform The Adventure Handbook has allowed us to vicariously travel all over the world. We’ve hitchhiked through Armenia and peddled through Patagonia. We’ve even slacklined Yosemite. Using a network of international contributors from many walks of life, from seasoned professionals to taxi drivers, the photo essays go off the beaten track and are often intensely personal. The Adventure Handbook recently announced their first-ever photo prize, inviting everyone and anyone to submit their best travel photos (they also asked us to be on their judging panel). The finalists will be exhibited—and the winner announced—at a photo show on Friday May 20 at Sydney’s Goodspace Gallery. Of the 92 shortlisted entries, here are some of our favorites, along with the stories behind them. For more information head to The Adventure Handbook’s website and follow them on Instagram.
