Stop-motion, Puppets, 2D Animation—Bat For Lashes' Mixed Media Music Video Has The Lot

Director Peter Sluszka creates an uncanny mix of styles and techniques.

If you can’t decide what visual technique to go with in your music video, then why not throw it all in? That’s what’s happened in this video for Bat For Lashes’ track “Lilies” by director Peter Sluszka. The result is a marvelously surreal journey that incorporates stop-motion clouds, monstrous puppets, glass polygons, skeletons riding bicycles, and lots of other strangeness.

The uncanny, jerky motion you get with stop-motion gives form to Natasha Khan’s lyrics and Kate Bush-style vocals, as she becomes immersed in her own visions come to life. While CGI can create fantastical worlds with incredible detail and lucidity, the physicality of stop-motion adds a sense of otherworldliness to this that couldn’t be conjured using computer-generated imagery alone. It’s the combination of the different styles and the mixed media that gives the video its particular charm.
