While we were all celebrating Back to the Future Day, filmmaker and artist Davide Rapp did a deep dive into the trilogy and uncovered some of director Rober Zemeckis' tropes that transcend time and space. Much like George Lucas said his films "rhyme," Zemeckis uses similar visual language throughout Marty McFly and Doc Brown's adventures, and Rapp's new video Seeing Triple: Back to the Future lays them all out side-by-side. One example: why does Marty always wind up getting himself into trouble by hitting his head like an idiot?Rapp has given both versions of Psycho, and two iterations of Pirhana the same treatment, lining up similar shots and phrases with eerie accuracy. His take on Back to the Future is particularly eerie in a "time is a flat circle" kind of way—if time travelers are doomed to repeat themselves, what hope have we got?
